Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an essential part of traditional oriental medicine, a comprehensive system of health care that spans over 3000 years.  The World Health Organization recognizes that acupuncture is an appropriate treatment for over 200 clinical conditions.  It is also effective for preventative care and health maintenance.  Thin, solid, sterile stainless steel acupuncture needles are inserted into acupuncture points to communicate from the outside to the inside.  Insertion of the slender needles goes unnoticed by some, and to others feels like a small pinch followed by a sensation of tingling, numbness, ache, traveling warmth or heaviness.  Needles remain in place for 20-40 minutes.

Acupuncture may be helpful for:  Withdrawal from addictions such as sugar, coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs, stress reduction, post surgical recovery, chronic fatigue, and decreased immunity. It can also treat disorders, discomforts, and infections of eye-ears-nose-throat, musculo-skeletal, neurological, mental-emotional and internal organs levels.

Needleless Acupuncture Options

Acu-Chrome (Color) Therapy combines the use of acupuncture points with attuned color (waves) for healing effects. The color(s) penetrate into the human energy field to stimulate cellular reactions and balance the ANS (autonomic nervous system), which regulates bodily functions and ultimately facilitates the harmonious flow of Qi (energy.) The end result is a restoration for the body's innate vitality.

Microcurrent Electro-Acupuncture emits small (micro) amounts of electrical current into acupuncture point sites. This technique resolves body and/or emotional imbalances. It has been described as a quick and needle-free modality that initiates healthy, rejuvenating effects for people.

Both of these techniques are quite useful when working with children, as well as adults, due to their needleless aspects. They have been found to be beneficial for not only most stress related disorders and common physical disease processes, but also with facial rejuvenation procedures.

Cupping is the ancient Chinese method of applying suction to the skin through glass or plastic cups placed on acupuncture points or sources of pain. This suction draws up the underlying tissues, bringing local blood to the surface and drawing fresh blood to the area. TCM practitioners believe that disease is a result of stagnated or blocked Qi. Cupping is beneficial for improved circulation of blood and Qi energy.

Cupping has also been found to have deep tissue benefits. The suction can draw toxins from tissue to flush from the area and ultimately, the body.

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Through light touch on the head, neck, spine, and other areas of the body, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.

Craniosacral Therapy is becoming popular for its use in complementing the body's natural healing processes. Although the following is not an exclusive list, craniosacral is used for and is effective with a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms, including:

Shiatsu (指圧 Japanese from shi, meaning finger, and atsu, meaning pressure) is a traditional hands-on therapy originating in Japan. There are two main Shiatsu schools; one based on western anatomical and physiological theory and the other based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Shiatsu is regulated as a licensed medical therapy by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (Japan), and elsewhere by various governing bodies set up by Shiatsu practitioners. Shiatsu is an evolving form, and its various styles incorporate (to differing degrees) aspects of Japanese massage traditions, Chinese Medicine practice, and "Western" anatomy and physiology.

What is shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork. The word shiatsu means "finger pressure", and shiatsu is sometimes described as a finger pressure massage.

How does shiatsu work?

Like acupuncture, shiatsu is based on the holistic system of traditional Chinese medicine, where illness is thought to result from imbalances in the natural flow of energy, or qi (pronounced "chee") through the body. Shiatsu therapists use finger and palm pressure to energetic pathways, called meridians to improve the flow of qi. A scientific explanation is that shiatsu calms an overactive sympathetic nervous system, which improves circulation, relieves stiff muscles, and alleviates stress.

What does shiatsu feel like?

The shiatsu therapist applies pressure using his or her fingers, thumbs, and/or palms in a continuous rhythmic sequence. The pressure feels more localized, because unlike other types of massage, the finger pads are used to apply pressure for most of the treatment instead of the entire palm. Certain pressure points may feel tender, which some people describe it as "good pain." If you feel any discomfort or pain during the treatment, tell your therapist and he or she will adjust the pressure so that it is comfortable to you. Most people say shiatsu is as relaxing as a classic forms of massage therapy.

What should I expect during my visit?

The treatment is done on a low massage table or on the floor. Unlike other forms of massage, with shiatsu no massage oil is applied, so you remain fully clothed during the treatment. You may be asked to bring comfortable clothing to wear.

What conditions is shiatsu used for?

  • Relaxation
  • Back pain
  • Headache
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Tiredness
  • Recovery from injuries
  • Stress
  • Arthritis pain
  • Poor digestion
  • Constipation
  • Depression

Shiatsu is an energy-based therapy that originated within the Asian Healing Arts. It incorporates the theory of acupuncture which proposes that energy, known as "Chi" ( or "Ki") moves through the body along well defined passageways called meridians. Creating balance in these energy flows is considered to be essential for health and well-being. Shiatsu, which involves application of pressure on energy points and energy pathways, has been found exceptionally effective for stress-reduction, reducing fatigue and alleviating a wide spectrum of symptoms.

Shiatsu Shin Tai, created by Saul Goodman, releases deep stress patterns within the body and recovers life force energy, allowing the client to live more fully in the present. Saul's courses are available to bodyworkers who have completed a minimum of 300 hours of study.
Shiatsu therapy stimulates and harmonizes the flow of “Qi” (vital energy) throughout the body and has both preventative and therapeutic affects. The curriculum integrates the ancient arts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory and assessment with the modern Western sciences, personal and professional development, and a supervised clinical experience.

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is therapeutic bodywork from Japan based on principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine combined with modern anatomy and physiology. It is one of the main modalities within the larger profession of Asian Bodywork Therapy. Shiatsu is non-invasive, performed without oils through light, comfortable clothing, and uses soothing, kneading, pressing, tapping and stretching techniques.
Shiatsu stimulates and harmonizes the flow of “Qi” (vital energy) throughout the body and has both preventative and remedial effects.
It is beneficial for a wide range of internal, musculoskeletal and emotional conditions. It may be stimulating or calming depending on what is therapeutically indicated. Shiatsu therapy reduces stress and contributes to overall well-being.
